Business cards

28 June 2009 - 01:29

Business card front, back in rolloverLast week I got my new business cards. The folks at Zalsman did a great job printing the range of colours carefully selected by Rob Krijgsman. I believe in this case offset print makes a noticable difference to digital print. The colours seen on screen (my digital previews) match the ones on paper quite well. The maroon really "pops" and the even the subtler green gradations are clearly demarcated. I also received some letterheads, most in full duplex, full colour. All of it looks equally wonderful. So I'm sure these stationaries will bring some extra sparkle to the already joyous task of sending invoices. :)

If you mouse over the image you can see the back of the card.

Movie embedding

17 June 2009 - 12:34

Despite some seriously evil legal terms, I moved the instructional videos for the Joomla-SugarCRM bridge from blip.tv to vimeo.
The guys at blip.tv weren't able to deliver xhtml 1.0 strict validating embed code. I considered youtube. But the encoding quality of vimeo, when it comes to screen casts, beats the crap out of youtube's encoding.
So, what did I accomplish? Just take a look at the w3.org validation of a video page.

Many thanks to Kor for providing this slideshow tour of the new office in Haarlem.

Tweaking the site

14 May 2009 - 11:59

Since a week I'm working in Haarlem every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. With the good folks of 2Value we're manning a new office at the Kenaupark. The synergy of sharing an office location can be a really good thing. One of the benefits is always having a usability guru around. Kor pointed me at some shortcomings of this website. Some of them I solved today. For instance, take a look at the print stylesheets, by making a print preview in your browsers. Looks pretty smart aye? I cleaned up some elements and greatly increased the font size. Another big improvement is the speed of the website. I automatically resize images most images on the size using the the Drupal imagecache module and the GD library. This makes it easy for me to upload full size pngs (my default screenshot file format). However, the file size of the scaled images - the project images and thumbnails - was still way to large. Using some nifty little imagecache actions allow me to change the file format of the images on the fly. Now I cache the images as jpg. This typically saves about 300 KB on the frontpage!

Dutch Joomla Days 2009

5 May 2009 - 13:26

Joomla!days Netherlands, 12 - 13 June 2009, NieuwegeinThe Dutch Joomla Days will take place at 12 & 13 June 2009 in the Mercure hotel in Nieuwegein. The event is aimed as much at the Joomla community as it is at professionals. The two day event will have a business - and a community oriented day.
This year I will be giving a training on professional Joomla implementation. The training will be a joint effort of three 2value associates. I will be talking about the use of Subversion in developing and deploying large Joomla sites.

New Layout

14 April 2009 - 02:05

Code Culture has a brand-spanking new layout. My wonderful friends Leon and Rob from WAT Ontwerpers have concocted a colourful corporate identity, logo, and website design. The drupal theme for this website, I built myself. Though this is still a work in progress (and it probably will be a work in progress for the remainder of it's life), many of the elements of the new design are in place. Let me point out some highlights:

  • The logo can be placed over any image and still retain it's expressive power. The header image can be altered to match a specific section's topic or style.
  • Good old Helvetica is serving some nicely layed out text styles. Most (semantically relevant) html text elements have been molded to a calm well readable rhythm. Blockquotes, links, linespacing, indenting, lists, etc have all been carefully layed out.
  • We have minimised wasted space by wrapping the text under the right column.
  • To further demarcate sections and whitespace, we've added some nice supportive visuals to the layout.
  • And don't forget the stuff most of us never see! Browser text resizing and print styles have been optimised.
  • Cross browser support: the template has been tested in firefox, opera, safari, ie6 and ie7.

Custom fields in SugarCRM

9 March 2009 - 21:33

I received a lot of questions about creating custom fields in SugarCRM. Custom fields are often required to get my SugarCRM authentication plugin for Joomla 1.5 to work. To be honest, I think you should know about creating custom fields before trying to authenticate your SugarCRM contacts in Joomla. Authentication can be tricky an it's good to have a solid grasp of both SugarCRM and Joomla before venturing on the path of remote authentication.

Recently however, the SugarCRM company changed the portal functionality of the community and professional editions of their software. The portal functions are now only available to the enterprise edition of SugarCRM. This also means that the default portal fields are removed from the contacts module. As a consequence, most users of SugarCRM and my authentication plugin will prefer to authenticate on custom fields only. The video below demonstrates how to create those fields.

E-Connection

2 December 2008 - 20:30

My coworkers at Tressis and me have created another green site. The website's layout is mainly blue, but the client is green at heart. E-Connection is a company that starts projects in sustainable energy, specifically wind energy. You could say they are a typically Dutch company, since they deal in wind mills.

In their own words:

E-Connection initiates and realises complex and innovative projects with a substantial positive environmental impact, in particular renewable energy projects. Furthermore E-Connection undertakes related, innovative and supportive research on this subject.

E-Connection comprises a small group of highly qualified professionals, who are able to put together all disciplines required to realise said projects.

Glasvezel Community

21 November 2008 - 15:49

Glass fiber internet connections are the future of broadband internet. It the next couple of years the amount of fiber connections is expected to grow exponentially. Right now the large communication corporations, cable suppliers, etc are making the necessary investments in the required infrastructure. Contrary to the introduction of DSL internet connections a couple of years ago, glass fiber requires a completely new web of cables. In large parts the in The Netherlands these cables still need to be placed but in a quite a few spots glass fiber connections are already available.

Chances are you yourself will switch to fiber in the next 5 years or so. It's about time then, that a community around this topic is launched. Enter: glasvezel.nu. This community website collects news about Dutch fiber initiatives and investments. Furthermore the website reviews hardware fit for fiber, explains the ins and outs such as: different connection types, applications, and details on the service suppliers. Finally the site has a postal code check that allows you to check for available connections on your address and that lists the various prices and subscriptions.
